The Education Technology Center is Maximizing Student Success!

August 28, 2012

The Education Technology Center is open to YTC students!  Denise Smith, Department Manager, and Rickey Wages, Technology Specialist, are supporting the college’s initiative to Maximize Student Success by opening the center to help students.  As colleges compete to recruit and retain students they look to research for guidance. The Survey of Entering Student Engagement (SENSE) and the Community College survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE) provide data to assist colleges develop their strategic plan to attract and retain students.  From this research, YTC has identified early connections, active collaboration, and student support services as our focus to maximize student success.

In response to sustain the YTC initiative, the Education Technology Center (ETC) has introduced student support days. The Center is open on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7:30am – 4:00pm (and other times by appointment). Denise and Rickey offer technology support which includes one on one assistance with D2L, WebAdvisor, downloading and uploading files, computer skills, understanding applications, brain storming, video, audio, web application and more. Through this initiative, the ETC supports all three criteria of maximizing student success.

Students are filtering in and reporting a great experience in the ETC.  The data captures comments with very interesting findings. Students were having frustrating experiences with technology in both face to face and online classes, and some students were ready to drop classes. With the help of the Education Technology Center, students are getting needed technology guidance, communicating better with their instructors, and are providing valuable feedback regarding their experiences as they move towards successful completion of classes.

Great job ETC! Let us know what your best practices are in the technology field.
