Deborah Tertinger’s Early Childhood Education students gained valuable lessons through a service learning project—and just happened to earn an award from the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education along the way!  The CHE selected their project, You Are Your Child’s First Teacher, for the CHE Service Learning Award.  The project exemplifies service to the community, student engagement, active learning, and faculty/student interaction.

Students planned the workshop to show parents served by Pilgrim’s Inn (a shelter for the homeless and those needing emergency support) how they can create low- or no-cost learning games and activities out of recyclables and items they might have in their homes.  The class created brochures, planned and prepared a spaghetti dinner, cared for children while parents participated in workshops, planned and presented breakout sessions based on age-appropriate games and activities, raffled gifts, provided entertainment, and analyzed the workshop evaluations afterwards.

Parents appreciated discovering strategies to help their children, and students encountered real-work experience in providing a community service.  Click on the link to hear students share their experiences planning and implementing their service learning project.
